The old Luxor Theatre was built in 1917. It is one of the few buildings that survived the bombraid on Rotterdam in May 1940. To fulfill the demands of the modern times, it has been brought back to its former glory, and many original features have been restored. The small tower in the facade, for example, has been modernised and given a new place in the facade. This ensures that more daylight can lighten up the building. The foyers and areas like the cloakroom and lavatories have been laid out more efficiently and new dressing rooms and foyers have been created for the artists. After the renovation of the facade, a new entrance has been created on the left side of the building. The facade is a reminder of the times that have passed, while the interior has been updated and is suited for a modern theatre.
The project consisted of the restauration of the monumental old building for the Dordrechts Museum for the permanent collection. The extension is for temporary exibitions and has been kept separate from the old building as a hoovering ‘stealth’ volume. Kraaijvanger architecten designed the exterior, Merkx + Girod Architecten designed the interior. The inner court has been roofed over, which creates a significant extension of the exibition area. By moving the entrance to the middle of the garden facade, the logistics of the building were also significantly improved. The entire museum was renovated at the same time.
Within the Dordrechts Museum is, apart from the exibitions, a shop, a restaurant and a library project.
